The Milky Way, A Journey Across Land And Sea (4K) Time Lapse Film

Here is a link to a time lapse film we just completed for 2019. This was a crazy challenging edit. The file ended up slightly over 1 terabyte! The approx 9000 43 mega pixel stills- over 8K of res- once put into sequence were then converted to GV HQX, since there were many mat composites needed to remove problems caused by people's headlights, spotlights, etc., the composites were then output as GV Lossless for the final timeline.

Edius 8.52 wasn't too happy about slinging all this data around on my 4790 system, but it got the job done. I doubt whether any other NLE would have handled it any better than Edius.

Madrid & Beyond - Video for Travel Agents

A short film aimed at Travel Agents in the USA to showcase Madrid & Beyond's tailor-made vacations in Spain and Portugal. It was filmed on the ground in UHD @ 50p CineLikeD with a Panasonic Lumix GH5 and in the air with a Mavic 2 Pro in UHD @ 25p Dlog-M. Shooting at 50p has helped me create some very smooth slow-motion. I also used the EDIUS Layouter to create slow zooms on many of the shots. The video was delivered at 1920x1080 @ 25p for travel trade shows and exhibitions and at 1280x720 @ 25p for the Madrid & Beyond website. This is the first of 10 films for Madrid & Beyond.

Alan, thank you for you kind words. I generally work on my own, and it gets a bit lonely at times. So it's always good to receive encouragement. The Iberian Peninsular is packed with goodies. I have barely scratched the surface. If you are interested more short videos will appear here over the next few months on different subjects - music, art, architecture, food, wine, the Roman, Arab and Jewish heritages, extreme sports etc.

It's so amazing that most people do not stop to enjoy the wondrous beauty of the world around them. I think those of us in the arts are the exception.

Alan, I totally agree. I think many of us are born with artistic flair without even knowing it. Like you, I started to make my first films when I was a teenager at high school. Celluloid in those days, of course. I have spent most of my life as a cameraman and editor experiencing the ever-changing technologies available. Even when I started producing and directing professionally I could not stop filming and editing.

While I was working on a video-tape tv series called "Frontline" at WGBH in Boston I was invited to try a new non-linear edit system called Avid. When I told my media friends in the UK what I had seen they said... "it will never catch on. Editing by computer? Never." Well, as we all know, Avid trail-blazed the way for many to follow, and look where we are now!"

The great thing is that camera gear and editing software such as EDIUS has now become affordable for almost everyone. We can therefore spend more time perfecting our creations. And in my opinion, time is what it takes to be totally visually aware of what you describe as... "the wondrous beauty of the world."

Rick - Boston was always at the lead in Educational TV broadcasting, and forged new territories in that medium for sure. Being a director/cameraman out here with an Electrical Engineering degree, I had the great advantage of helping to develop and use a widely used predecessor to Avid, which took hold in the TV industry even before Avid came onto the scene.

One was a system called LaserEdit, which was a Laserdisc oriented editing system, where dailies were transferred to Laserdiscs (remember those short-lived silver platters the size of LP records?), and the computer controlled the video on the discs to a hard-drive edit as video takes were chosen, marked "in" and "out" and became the next part of the edit (along with meta-data to assemble the original tapes into a final version).

The other one, even before LaserEdit was called "Montage" (to the best of my recollection). It was a truly cumbersome (i.e.*******")system, whereby a bank of somewhere between 12 and 20 VHS tape decks were loaded with VHS dailies, and synchronized in playback on multiple monitors (1 for each deck), and the decisions of what take to use at what point was chosen and transferred to a "Master" VHS tape. Can you imagine. But it was progress. I never edited anything on that system, and never wanted to try!

Back when you were a kid, I suspect!

4k (UHD) HDR10

I have edited a short film with Edius 9.5 and MB Looks plugin.

It is a BT2020 PQ project that delivers HDR10. I uploaded the film to youtube and tested firefox and microsoft browsers. Only the firefox is able to play 4K HDR correctly.

The colors are fine using YouTube on my LG UHD. Make sure you have the latest version of YouTube installed on the TV or device being used.
The last shot with the background replacement shows the border between the rotoscope squirrel/leaves and the background.

When using Firefox and YouTube, what were you displaying it on? If it was a computer monitor, was the monitor 10bit HDR10 capable? Also was the 10bit option turned on in your graphics card?
Or, do you have a HDR capable output card?

At the moment I do not have a HDR monitor. I have wait until it gets affordable to me. But I also like to have a 10bit camera.

So I´m doing my HDR-grading with the Edius waveform-monitor and keep the values between 0 nits and 500 nits only direct sunlight or explosions go up to 1000 nits. Then I put a testexport on usbdevice and watch it on my HDR TV. The only thing I can do to view/control HDR on a normal monitor is to use PCC at the last step in the timeline to convert HDR (BT2020 PQ) back to SDR (BT709) and then deactivate this for encoding.

This method is only good for a few films but not for professionals, who do many films.
