And if you know how to work with it you can get picture quality which blows many 5x+ more expensive "video cameras".
      Thanks, Andrew.

Don't you use a Sony as well? If you're interested in external mic stuff and your camera has a mic input, you may want to check out the Saramonic SmartRig. It's actually an awesome little phantom pre-amp and that's before you take the price into consideration, it's only about £23.

For anyone else interested. The main issue with many camcorders or stills/video cameras, and this applies to some pro cameras. Many do not have very good amplification circuitry in them, although most have got good analogue to digital converters. In fact, it's hard to find cameras that have got bad converters, as most will be using converter chips made by a dedicated audio manufacturer.

If you simply replace, or don't rely on the camera's internal preamplifier, and use a dedicated one. You can massively improve the audio quality of the cameras internal recording. This also helps to remove the need for an external audio field recorder if the camera records uncompressed audio and makes camera to edit really simple, no wasted time syncing audio and video files before you can start editing.

The best way to use an external pre-amp, is to set the camera's mic input level as low as it will go, usually a single click up on a GUI driven level setting, or put it into line level if available and then let the external preamp do all the gain work. This is more so beneficial with DSLRs that typically have low gain noisy mic preamps.

If you use a preamp that is also capable of providing phantom power. You can also use very high end condenser mics and shotguns that can't self power, which the camera would otherwise not be able to work with.

Here's a couple of examples of using mics that require phantom power, with cameras that don't have phantom power.

      Cheers,
      Dave.

        Hi Pat.

Is there an issue with embedding? I use an iPad, tablet and laptop to view the forum and have never seen issues with the videos. I understand that stills can be an issue, but have never seen or experienced resize issues with YouTube embed commands.

If there are such issues, why does the forum server back end and allow for them?

Plus, embedded videos also keep forum users engaged with the forum interface.

        Cheers,
        Dave.

        • No issue. It just takes up much more space especially with replies. So much less scrolling for those of us that read ALL of the posts. Plus it seems a bit more polite to me as a user can choose to click the link if they are interested or ignore it if not and not have it so much in their face. That is why I labeled it a request.

I can't talk for anyone else, but. As a content creator and someone who has a vast knowledge of certain post procedures and equipment, and shares the knowledge freely. I expect to be able present my hard worked efforts in the best way possible.

I, like many others, spend a lot of time and effort making these types of videos and to be told that they take up space, feels like an insult.

You talk about the user's choice to ignore, they can most certainly do that anyway with an embedded video, they simply do not have to engage.

As for less scrolling, seriously? The entire use of this forum requires scrolling. If it were such a chore to have to scroll through a forum to read its content, then people would simply choose to not use a forum.

As for your request, I for one respectfully decline and choose to post in a way the forum allows. If the forum posting commands change to disallow the use of embedding, then fair enough. But until then, I for one will continue to use the forums functions as they are.

            • Why make such a big deal out of a simple request? If you want to ignore something that would help me, ignore it. We as a group, appreciate everyone that takes the time to make helpful videos. I personally appreciate the ones that use links. :-)

And yes, believe it or not, scrolling can be inconvenient when you only have a couple of minutes to view the entire forum multiple times a day.

It would appear that you're the one making a big deal about it, Pat. After all, it was you who brought it up.

Reading that last line of yours "And yes, believe it or not, scrolling can be inconvenient when you only have a couple of minutes to view the entire forum multiple times a day". Who are you talking about, you, or general forum users?

As for taking up space. I suggest that if you want to continue this, maybe it'd be best to do it via PM, so neither of us take up anymore space on this matter on the open forum, where it really doesn't belong.

I'll have to take a good look at both those Sony cameras, looks like they could be a really good option for a high quality small system, especially as I could add a good mic when needed.

Look forward to some examples if you decide to make an edit.

                  • Planet Earth Beneath The Milky Way In 4K

This is an entire re-edit of the time lapse film I did in 2016 and has some new content from this year. The previous 2016 version was my first major time lapse film and I was never really satisfied with it and decided it needed a complete redo. So, here it is.

Planet Earth, Planet Earth 4K, Barry Chall, Yosemite 4K, Yosemite Valley 4K, 4K Milky Way, Milky Way 4K, Milky Way Core, Milky Way Core 4K, Landscapes 4K, Landscapes, Milky Way, Time Lapse

                    • First Edius Clip

Here is my first Edius Clip, still with the watermark.
(At this point I want to mention, they should really remove that, as evaluating a software needs to be done in a real worls situation and I can not just edit a whole project for fun and throw it away at the end after working many hours on it.)

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

                      Issues I was facing:
-Unusable playback as soon the simple title or a more pronounced effect was added - to the point I gave up on color adjustments and titles.
-export was a nightmare, took me several tries to get my format I needed and export times are high in comparison to resolve/fcpx

Look at this simple clip, it should really playback properly.

                      • Sorry but the trial has limitations the watermark and in the render area.

If you edit with the full version you will see an immediate jump in performance.

I think you should familiarize yourself with EDIUS.

                        • The Shadows of Men documentary

Here's a documentary I started on Edius v4 and completed on v6. It is the story of one platoon that, during the Vietnam war , existed for eight years - I interviewed 22 crew members of the platoon whose experiences ranged from when the platoon was first organized to when it was decommissioned. The Razorback gunship platoon had only one mission in its existence - combat.

Unfortunately I was a one man band for this project - DP, Audio, Grip, Editor, Muse. I shot the interviews on a makeshift green screen in a small motel room with makeshift lights and the unevenness in the lighting of the green screen came to haunt me later in post. It started out as a simple project - I thought I'd do a short little piece using some still images I had and use Imaginate to create a little .avi of it - then one of the crew members gave me an hour long DVD of footage he had shot in combat with the platoon on Super 8 film - I wound up buying 30 more minutes of 16mm film of the platoon that was shot during TET of '68 from NARA - did eleven more interviews in addition to the first eleven - and then started pulling out my hair.

I have to say that over the course of the documentary, the Edius forum helped me tremendously when faced with dilemmas I needed fixing. This is really a great community for support.

For Amazon Prime members, The Shadows of Men is free to watch at:

                            • Here is a project I just completed for the TCU Lacrosse Team:

Overview of the TCU Men's Lacrosse Program.Filmed and Produced by Championship Films

This was shot on a Panasonic PX270 & GH5. The GH5 was used for all of the gimbal shots, interviews and indoor footage. I filmed using VLog on the GH5 and applied the Leeming LUT in Primary Color Corrector for the editing.

Although the color of the GH5/Leeming combination can be striking, the color of the PX270 is still more accurate. The shades of purple really test how good a camera is imho. I had to key the purples in the GH5 footage to be correct using 3 Way color Corrector. They are a bit too blue if left alone. The PX270 with the customized internal color matrix nails it. Three chippers do still have a place.

This is one of my first full edits with 4k footage (all of the Gh5 footage was shot in 4k30p). I have to say, 4k is a resource hog. I made sure to run the resolution at 8bit full for better playback. In some areas where multiple clips overlapped and maybe a stabilizer or other filters were in the mix I had to go down to 1/2 for smooth playback. The 4k footage on a 1080p timeline is quite a lot of work for the computer. This is mixed with the AVC-Ultra which is already a difficult codec.

I would say we are still a few generations of CPUs away from taking care of business with 4k footage. Can't imagine a three camera 4k shoot in 10bit 60p.

Anyway, thanks to GV for adding the LOG capability in Edius. It really has kept the software in the modern times.
