Very nice Barry. How do you adjust the iris when going to sundown to night? I tried auto on my a7s and the night was too bright. Amazing ISO on the Sony a7s.

        • I use the Sony Play Memories time lapse app. It is absolutely outstanding for doing these "holy grail" sequences. One caveat, is that often during that transitions, it will start adjusting to the lower light correctly and then kick back up a bit and then back down again. This needs to be corrected by either speeding up the sequence in post, trimming out the jump in light and blending the brightness on both ends of the cut, or just key framing the whole sequence to adjust the brightness transition. But, the app is really fantastic and does everything flicker free. I also prefer to do these types of shots in two stages. The first will be from dusk to dark until about 20 minutes or so after the stars start to appear, then I'll stop the sequence and wait until absolute darkness, usually about a half hour later when there are many more stars and then start recording again with manual settings and longer exposure times but still using the same interval. In post, these can then be nicely blended together.

You mentioned that when you tried night shooting, the night was too bright. With long exposure times, this is normal for astro and can be easily corrected in post with Lightroom or Capture One. When the moon is present, it will look like broad daylight. Some lapsers like this look. I don't and in my full moon sequence used a lot of adjustment layers in Capture One to darken the sky and separately the foreground.

          • Good info Barry, will try Sony Time lapse. Are you using flat settings in the camera like Cine B, curves, etc.

            • I assume you're referring to when shooting video. No, I'm not. That stuff is all very confusing to me. I find I can get good results without the log modes. That also eliminates the need for a ND filter as the logs require higher ISOs. When I'm shooting video of water I always under expose a bit and push in post. On a few of the water clips, I was able to restore detail in some hotspots by applying masks over them and using a YUV.

This is my tribute to exploring one of those thin blue lines shown on topographical maps. Shot in September 2016 in the North Georgia Mountains using a Panasonic GH4 camera. Mark, great video of the Blue Line. Your work is something I seek to copy if I'm talented enough to produce through this coming winter. But what I really want to say is thank you for is including Jamendo dot com. I've been checking them out and I think I found a new source for great soundtracks at a super reasonable price. I just sent them an email with a few questions that I think they will okay and after that I'll be joining and downloading.

                    Thanks again for sharing!!!

Glad that you liked it. There are a lot of reasonably priced music sites out there. But for me jamendo, audionetwork and soundcloud are my go to sources.

I just finished this film featuring Cozumel underwater scenes of the beautiful coral reefs and abundant sea life which inhabits them. Truly a beautiful place. The film was shot in 3D for the Underwater 3D Channel but is going on it in both 2D and 3D versions.

                          • Another project for fun. White Owl Falls is located near Sapphire, North Carolina. I had to drive a long way to find decent flowing water due the continuing drought in the southeast. Shot using a Panasonic GH4 camera, set at 1080p 60fps. Lenses used were the Panasonic 14-45, 45-175, and Olympus 60mm macro. Edited with Edius 5.51.

                            • Nice job, Mark. I really like that effect you use going from normal to slow shutter speeds on a couple of the waterfall scenes.
