          • Updated my production reels.

Having just put up my website since moving to the U.S. I decided its time to update my reels. One is from cinematography, corporate, visual FX and commercial works, the other my 3D animation work. Though 3D, the final sequences are color matched/graded and edited on EDIUS.

1 min. look around at NAB.
The buzz with Edius is "upcoming integration" with all the other hardware.

                    • I've never posted a clip to a site like this before - mainly because it's been my contention that a clip doesn't represent the whole piece. However, having just completed a 60 second entry for the Contour Shuttle Pro competition which used some useful Edius features, I thought others might be interested.

                      The clip is at:

I have been a Shuttle Pro user for many years and although I find the software a little susceptible to changes in other software requiring more frequent reinstals of the Contour software, it's small and simple. Because of my familiarity with the machine I took the approach that it gave video editors an efficient dedicated control like no other kit.

I wanted to illustrate the point that most mechanical "things" had dedicated controls and since I also needed some background music I started with a piano keyboard. It obviously needed an intricate piece of music so I chose a part of Mozart's Piano Sonata which I'd recorded many years ago being played by a talented friend. Unfortunately that was audio only and my friend now lives in the USA so the trick was to find someone else who could manage the fingering. The nearest I could get was to video record a professor of computing at a local university who set his metronome to a speed at which he could comfortably play the section. Then in Edius I speeded up the result to match the soundtrack - 260%.

I used adjusted glow transitions from New Blue to link the disparate examples and a couple of masks from Edius to concentrate the attention (though on reflection I wish I'd softened the edge more). All the colour grading was done within Edius. The sound was mixed using a Behringer BCF2000 control surface for which, of course, Edius has an interface built in.

Obviously to anyone in production as a business, time is precious and I could only devote a few days to this indulgence - and in any case the deadline is April 30. The material was shot on an EX1R and a Hero2 in three afternoon shoots. The edit took the best part of a day.

I make no special claims for the work, it's not the best I've ever done though it is one of the shortest but as a convert from Liquid to Edius of less than 12 months I'm pleased with the efficiency of editing that Edius offers.

Well you should do more I found it very very good both in its use of some of the features in Edius blur, p in p, or layouter, but more so for your concept in its execution. If ever there was an example of simpicity and imparting imformation then this is it IMHO.

Great promo piece. It has a very convincing message on why to use a dedicated analogue/physical input controller.
