        • Grading a Tropical Resort Commercial

          I tried to do the edit for this project on Premiere primarily for magic bullet looks and colorista.
          I figured MB Looks, with its canned effects, can give me a faster finish as well as the keying and masking tools of colorista allowing me to fine tune the image.

          I then realized premiere didn't give me real time results unless you use only the realtime filters.

          I decided to go back to Edius, Its really underated in its features, firstly its still chugging along realtime even with stacks of effects on clips, and also, by using the tools it provides, the looks in magic bullet can be achieved within edius.

          for instance;

          Regions --this can act like Power masks and you can relight a scene

          Chrominance --use this with 'combine filters' and you have keying like those in colorista

          White balance --- NOW THIS should be renamed 3 way color correction!

          Old movie filter -- for those subtle vignettes

          All these on a clip at real time.

          Do check out the commercial;

          • The people you made that for were very happy I should imagine. On a technical note what were codec did you use for each of your lo medium and high versions? Presumably you uploaded a separate file for each variation? Is the player you used with the standards switch local to the hosting site?

            • vortigern,

              Yes they were, as to the codec, I only upload one file, a 1080 wmv file, the host is the one that converts it to lo med and high versions. They will also accept other codecs like h264.

                        The link above is to a music video demo - A while back I was asking workflow questions in this forum about editing 32 song tracks of 4-6 takes a piece times 6 cameras in Edius- all HD content of mixed frame-rates. We used several cameras including a sony ex3, canon xha1, canon 5dmark 2, and some other stuff like a steadicam and jib. obviously, we couldn't line it all up at once so we did everything in smaller pieces.

                        The end result was that we edited each camera using edius' multi-cam edit features, sometimes doing multiple compilations for each camera if there were more than 8 takes per song, and then we put together all the final composites together and did a multi-cam edit on those. After that, we laid in the studio audio tracks, pulled all the tracks together in one sequence, sound balanced, and rendered for vimeo. At final count, we had 46 sequences in editing, 100 hours of editing, 26 hours of shooting, 1 terrabyte of footage, and an 8' final demo.

                          One of the many clips we have put together for weddings - this one was in Savannah Georgia and featured the groom singing the background tracks live to his bride as we did flashbacks throughout the day. We did various location shoots with her including the site of the famous Forest Gump run, and some other locations downtown.

                          Shot with Sony EX3, and 5DM2s with various lenses - edited with edius 5.0...

                          Enjoy!

                              • Nothing special about the video I'm posting. My youngest brother passed away on labor day and I made this video for his memorial service. Much easier to do when you don't know the person. This one was made through many tears, and yet it has helped me and my family to grieve. Just a reminder of the power of video.
