  • ProRes to Edius

    Hi Guys

I have had alook through the past threads but could not find any info on this particular problem.

Client has supplied a .mov 1920x1080 HD file exported from FCP in ProRes.....the clip plays back in Quicktime no problems and Edius can import it no problems.....however the clip is distorted....in Edius it shows up as 1920x1080 with the actual video sqeezed against the lefthand edge of the frame in 4:3 format with the rest of the 1920x1080 frame black.

I can fix this by using the layout tool and left aligning the clip and then stretching it width wise.....it seems to look Ok....just wondering if this is normal or should the correct frame size show up in Edius.

My guess is that the person exporting this from FCP has messed up the export settings somehow as I believe it came from an HDV 1440x1080 timeline....however they are out of town and the job needs to get done.

Any one able to shed some light on this.

    Regards

    Dave.

It should show fine. With your version of Edius, ProRes and ProRes 422 (hope I remembered them correctly) should work with no problem.

right click on clip and go to video properties and check the frame size there - alter it if needs be!

You may also want to upgrade your version of QuickTime--I recall there being some issues with the PC version of QuickTime properly decoding ProRes codec QT files...

Thanks guys....I have the latest QT installed....and the clip properties in movie inspector show the frame size as I mentioned at 1920x1080.....its just that within the 1920x1080 frame the actual video is sqaushed to the left in a 4:3 shape....wierd.
Like I said I can use the layout tool to increase the width by about 133% to fix this....just wondering if this is normal....I guess not.

I tried a ProRes 1920x1080 23.98p file yesterday, loaded fine into EDIUS.

Just for testing purposes, of course. Since your file is a full HD file, there shouldn't be any aspect ratio issues. If it looks squished, go into the properties and change it to Square Pixels and the fields to the proper one. If it's interlaced, it should be upper fields first. If it is progressive, just set it to progressive.

Thanks Storm Dave....the problem is that all the settings are correct and match the file.
Something seems to be stuffed in the translation coming into Edius.

Any how job done for now....but I will persue this futher when the client gets back to town.....I have a feeling this is a problem with thier export settings.

              Regards and thanks to all.

On a side note I got a call from a guy yesterday regards an FCP export from a mixed timeline HDV DV that the TV station are having wierd interlacing problems with his program when they dump it into their Avid.....this is from both tape & QT mov file.....he seemed a little frustrated after several all night renders with no solution and a deadline looming.....you gotta love Edius when it comes to mixing things up on the timeline and getting things done clean n fast.

Actually, STORMDAVE was talking about the clip properties, not the project settings.

Right-click on one of the clips in question and select properties. In the dialog that comes up, there is info on the PAR (pixel aspect ratio) as it is delivered to EDIUS, and you can change it to something else there too, as he described.

                    Hi Chris

Perhaps I should have said all the settings in the clip properties are correct....so as to avoid my causing your confusion with project settings.

Edius clip properties show the exact same properties as QT movie inspector.....no matter what setting I choose in the clip properties I get this wierd distorted video portion within the frame itself.......only way to get correct display is to distort the width only by stretching it in the layout tool to 133%.

                    Regards

                    Dave.
