  • Edius 5.11- Impossible to restore clips-serious Bug..!

It is hard to believe that nobody has reported on this problem, but i havent found anything about this yet:

    I was testing Edius 5, using a 4.6-project file.
Everything came in fine, beside some.wav-files which are basicly synched clips from a sound device.

Thought, okey, i might have to relink (allthough they worked fine in 4.6, nothing changed, same path, no clips deleted.
When i tried to restore them, i found out, that edius is looking for the files in the exect correct directory, but cant work with them.

Trying to relink them ends up with an error message, saying they were not the same clips.

That really shocked me..i wanna do the transition to Edius 5, but i got this huge documentary project and there is no way i can use #5 having this issue..!

Having Payed for the update allready i feel a little stupid now..does anybody know about this problem and what to do?

    Thanks a lot

p.s. if this wasnt reported to the "reported issues" i will copy it there..

First of all I found 5.1 more flexible
    try the following:
Don't restore them with folder (all method)
If you do them one by one EDIUS will relink the even if the are different.

We found this ound when subtitling are program. Due to using a different program the 1040 subtiles where laid in png.

    We wanted to use tga.

We tried the folder method and that did not work.
When opened the project and doubble clicked on each title edius open the restore dialog we pointed it to the corresponding tga and it worked. I replaced the png with tga. Different extention different size.

I know wav should work from folder. I will check this for you and see what happen.
    BWF files yes?

      'Hey Steve,

      thanks for the quick response,
I tried replacing clip by clip (which would drive me crazy if i had to do it for all of them..!hope you had some assistance for 1000 pics to be relinked..!) but this also didnt work out..same error message..so i am puzzled what i can do here..!

I Guess its GVs turn now..!
Its .wav files in BWF standart..like i said, worked perfect before..what i didnt try is imorting them to the bin in drag n drop them again..maybe its really due to the format..i cant test this here right now..but thanks for your support with the bwf-test!

I let you know later what I have found. :)

Can you send me a copy of your project . Just the project file? The ezp?
Zip it up and upload as an attachement or email it to me.

My experience is that this has been an unaddressed intermittant bug in 4.6 and P2 select randomly failing to relink clips. A tedious work around is to double click on each "broken" clip in the timeline. A relink dialog box will appear. IF you can identify/remember the miissing clip's file path you can relink it, however, you can also relink an incorrect clip this way. Another tedious work around is to reopen the clips in the bin and reedit them. Obviously the easiest thing is to stay in 4.6. or a version that works for you. A general rule of thumb is to finish a project in the software version it was created in. Don't upgrade in the middle of a project. This holds true for all software upgrades - not just Edius. If you must upgrade - print your incomplete timeline to file as an AVI, Quicktime, or MPEG (your choice) and open that in a new project and go from there.

I don't always use relink 'cause it doesn't always work.

Also, Grass Valley/Canopus does not have all the same engineers that created Edius originally and so Edius has had to reverse engineer some code which is why things that were not buggy have become so. Code writers apparently don't always document what they do, so if they leave...it's an unsolved code writing mystery. This engineering turnover resulting in new bugs has been my main reservation in seeing Edius as a survivng long term editing platform.

This is very interesting information, where does this come from?

This is part of what I got from EDIUS in January when I inquired about IMAGINATE.

"We don’t have an exact timetable for this integration as the technology needs to be reverse engineered first—the product development team and engineers that designed it no longer work for the company."

                Also, consider this.

The editing/photo staff I am a part of have had a long 4 year history of P2 SELECT triumphs (in version 3.5 onward) and failures (EDIUS 4 onward). While our staff still lives in an EDIUS 4.6 world, we now run P2 SELECT outside of EDIUS as a stand alone program to copy P2 cards unless a tight deadline requires editing while copiing. P2 SELECT used to be flawless. Now it's just usually dependable. Relink is a great idea that still needs work.

Seems like the new folks at EDIUS have a different view of zero's and one's than the prior developers.

                Does that seem logical?

Imaginate and EDIUS are 2 different products. That statement was clearly in answer of your imaginate question.

Back to topic..thanks for the new hint..i am not having trouble with P2 data in this case (there is also a known problem with restoring spanned-P2-clips..!), but with some .wav. files..!

And i didnt change to edius 5 yet, but i did this tests on a different PC with the results above..!

Steve, Ill send you a message along with the .ezp...!
I am curious what you have to say..!

Ben I think you are doing something different.

I can relink your wav files to whatever wav I choose.

I choose relink file from the restore menu and I just pick a wav I want .

                      Look At me picture.

I relinked your Take00 to my file take3

A file on my disk H with a totally different directory . I can do this totally at random with different wavs and EDIUS does not complain.
Are you using the demo or a full install of 5.11?
If I can do this you must surely be able to relink the original files.

I'm telling you all that relink doesn't always work no matter what or where the file is. Files, projects, computers, disks and networks can get corrupted and that's just life in the real world. In EDIUS, like all programs, bugs come and go and reappear. When I ask my IT gurus about weird anomolies they just smile and say, "It's a Windows thing" or "It's a known bug, here's a work around." EDIUS will encounter a serious problem and need to close. Save your project early and often.

We are trying to find out what the problem is in this case and maybe find a solution.

                            Hey Steve,

sorry for not beeing back here earlier, but i was out to shoot and had no access to the web..!

Thanks a lot for your efforts,
its good to hear that it worked that way...i was basicly using the Trial Version to test it on a different PC and thats where the problems came in.

I am not sure if it was weather the Trial or something is wrong with my original .wav-file and Edius doesnt like it in Version 5.11.

Ill work this out a little better, and test under different circumstances...i am just about to set up a new editing laptop and i might try all this again with the Trial and the Original Version, to test where the problem is in my case..!

                            Thank you very much Steve...!

Okay, hope could you relink ,or failing that, could re-edit the missing files, Ben.

Steve, I tell it like it is. I didn't mean vex you.

I just had the experience that a P2 clip would not restore/relink in 4.6. I have been using P2 select to copy/import SD for the last twelve days of court testimony for multiple daily newscasts. This produces about 100 gigs of P2 content. My laptop can only take 40 gigs, so I use USB portable drives. Some problems (procoder locking up, EDIUS crashing about once a day - so I reboot as needed) and right now the dreaded uninkable missing clip. I do my work around and bring the missing clip in as a new file and notice that in the bin, EDIUS sees the missing clip with "clip name", and sees the newly loaded clip with "userclipname". I have "ClipName" checked in P2 select for "Clip Name in Bin" - not "UserClipName". Now, others have had this intermittant problem, both here on this forum and at the TV station I work at. I have to erase my P2 cards for reuse, so I double chack that a file has indeed been copied to a hard drive.

My two bit untrained uneducated uninformed thinking is that EDIUS and/or Windows gets occaisionally confused with which name is used for a file when reopened in the bin.

Economics and other factors dictate the we won't be upgrading all our edit stations, laptops, or cameras anytime soon.
