  • Question About Boris Usage

    Hello,

Just wanted to ask anybody who uses Boris products.

How is the functionality compared to after Effects?

Can say Boris Red replace the need for After Effects?

How is the workflow compared to After Effects?

To me, After Effects has a slow workflow and all of the rendering makes audio syncing really time consuming.

    Is Boris Red any better?

    Thanks

I use RED4. This is the best of RED line, the Blue is DIFFERENT.

How is the functionality compared to after Effects?
When you became familiar with RED- it is almost as good as AE

Can say Boris Red replace the need for After Effects?
    Not allways, but yes.

How is the workflow compared to After Effects?
Different. Examle: 3D text with textures you can make in Boris, but not in AE

To me, After Effects has a slow workflow and all of the rendering makes audio syncing really time consuming.
Every composit software need to be rendered.
    Is Boris Red any better?
Depends... For now, Edius ver 4.24 it has plugin, probably in 4.5 you will be able to interact with AE, but not confirmed yet. See some tutorials to deside yourself if RED is good for you. And keep in mind that workflow is completely different from AE.

Allow me to confirm it here - there's no interaction between EDIUS and AE in v4.5.

The hardware plug-in for NX/SP remains as it has been till now.

        Mr Sparkle,
what I ment here is not a video output plugin, but a variation of Adobe Active link, that allow you to copy and paste a portion of your clip from timeline of one application to another.
From my uderstanding this is the most logical way for a creative person to work in videoediting inviroment. You may chouse the editing software between Avid, GV, Adobe, Newtek etc and compositing one between AE, Combustion, Boris, ParticleIllusion to best of your knoledge and the task you want to accomplish.
Well, maybe not now, maybe in a year or more, but I think, this should happen one day.

I know what you meant, I was just clarifying that such technology was not going into v4.5, just in case somebody was looking for this feature in a couple of months.

Making this work with GV's hardware/software wouldn't be really worth it for GV, for obvious reasons. Adobe is Adobe and GV is GV. It's competition.

But one thing that I (like many others) would like to have is the ability for the NX/SP/SD/HD cards to switch between the AE output and Edius4.5 by just Alt tabbing instead of shutting down applications just to get output. This feature is a vital part of any recent studio, from small post production houses to big houses.

Mr Sparkle, what about the AAF support that is/was going into 4.5? Doesn't that allow some interaction with AE 7 and above?

I have tried the RED 4.1 demo with Edius and being familiar with using other Boris programs within other NLE's, the biggest disappointment for me was the lack of realtime external monitor preview when actually working within the RED plugin. The Boris people tell me this is due to the way Edius works and they cannot do anything about it. If the GV and Boris people could get together, if they haven't already, and see if anything could be done that would be fantastic.

I think the Boris programs are great, and with the 'lack' of 3rd party plugins for Edius, Boris is the best way to add needed extra functionality into Edius.

Granted, you can check your work on the external monitor after leaving the plugin and 'returning' to Edius, but it 'looks' so much more professional when you can say to the client sitting next to you "is this what you want? No! What about this?" without having to go in and out of plugins or asking them to 'sit' on your lap while you work and watch the computer monitor closely.

Also, the Boris effects don't automatically update when you 'return' to Edius. It's just a matter of remembering to click on them in the 'effects' window. Something to do with how Edius locks renders or something... This isn't too much of a hassle, just an extra step though.

                      Sorry for the long rant.

In so far as being able to export and import AAF from one application and use it in the other, yes, this is possible.

Boris Red 4.1 with Edius 4.24 problem

Boris Red 4.1 plug in works fine with SD video but in HD it looks like the fields get reversed. In HD I have field order set to upper, but it still looks jittery. It works fine if I use the stand alone Red engine. Just weird when using the plug in with Edius.
