I am using edius broadcast 4

I was working on a p2 project and doing an edit form the p2 cards while the data transferred in the background to my hard drive.

For some reason when i came back to the project a week later all the clips were offline. Edius was looking for the clips on the p2 cards. Edius had copied the clips to the hard drive ??

When i opened up the clip restore box i tried to restore the correct path.

i select the folder and i get an error from edius saying it cant find the clip.

I can navigate to the clip and highlight it but the OK button is grayed out ???

In the end i had to dump the project and re edit it.

Yep - seen that, but don't have an answer. Sometimes we'll find that even though Edius copies the P2 clip from the card reader to the local drive, the pointers still remain to the P2 card. At that point, even restore clips doesn't work.

I've tried to find a pattern and thought I had one, but it's inconsistent.

Let me understand you. You said you let EDIUS edit directly from your P2 cards? Is that correct? I have a couple of questions for you -

a) What h/w are you connecting the PC to in order to allow EDIUS to edit directly from P2 cards?

b) Do you have that P2 card video now? If no - that's your problem.

Because when EDIUS open the P2 video into the bin, the path to your P2 card reader is recorded - and when you remove the P2 card and/or card reader from the system, EDIUS can't find the video anymore. That's why you ended up with that problem.

Unless you intend to finish the project within the timeframe when your P2 card is still plugin to the computer, a much better way is -

1. Copy the entire P2 card contents into your computer Hard-disk. Not by using EDIUS, but, external to EDIUS.
2. Tell EDIUS to open the Hard-disk version, instead of your P2 card version.

One of the P2 import options in broadcast is copy clips to local drive. That's where Edius sometimes gets it's pointers confused. Most of the time it works, and you can then remove the P2 card from a card reader. We have Panasonic USB multi-port card readers for P2. However, there are times that the files copy fine, but the pointer apparently still points to the P2 card instead of to the local copy. I think there is a pattern, but I'm still not sure. I think it involves browsing a different file folder before the copying totally finishes.

I have seen this also. Same workflow, copy the files from the P2 card to a local hard-drive, start editing with the footage whilst the copying continues and sometimes the files go offline when re-opening the project. I just wait until the files have completed copying before doing anything...

I have never used that feature in EDIUS to copy the P2 data to local HDDs. So much better to copy it OUTSIDE of EDIUS first, especially, when I have lots of P2 cards to copy. Then I use EDIUS on the HDD's version. Much better and EDIUS's response is also faster.

Yes i normally copy the footage outside edius before the edit. But there are times when i have 3 32gb cards and i need to have an edit completed 10 mins after the shoot.


I normally do a 3 cam shoot. 3 cams recording for 1 hour.

I connect up the camera HVX200 via a usb2 cable to the computer, i can then edit from the cards while the footage transfers to the hard drive.

The problem i noted only sometimes happens.

If that's your requirement, AND until Grass Valley fixes this problem (if they are aware of it) - a workaround will be -

Do your "quick" edit directly from P2 cards - to show your directors / clients first. You said 10 minutes, right? So - it can't be that elaborate - yes?

Then you copy the P2 cards into your HDDs outside EDIUS (don't use P2 Select to do that).

You can redo your rough edit that you have done using the HDD's version.

Think this is possible? Much better than having to toss the entire project one week later ...
