Check out this very excellent pdf on 8 channel audio by Steve. Slightly different than 4 but you will get the idea.

can''t seem to capture all 4 channels

I haven't even gotten to the editing of 4 channels yet. I can't seem to be able to figure out how to capture 4 channels from the orig. hdv camera tape.
thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Have you tried placing your capture on the timeline with 4 channels of audio mapped? Right click on your captured file, choose properties, go to the audio tab, and see how many mono channel options there are.

This is really simple there is no button to capture 4 channel audio.
          Why?
Edius will always capture all 4 channels.

Just follow the advice Pat gave you and all will be clear. Crystal clear. :)

            I'm missing something

OK. I click on the captured clip -
right click properties - shows 2 audio channels and stereo is checked.
the video was recorded with 4 audio tracks that play back through the
            camera.

I started a new project - set the audio channels to 8
and mapped the first 4 as -
            channel - 1 - 1L
            channel - 2 - 1R
            channel - 3 - 2L
            channel - 4 - 2R

when I drag the clip onto the timeline only 2 mono channels show up.

I also tried to map them as:
            channel - 1 - 1L
            channel - 2 - 2R
            channel - 3 - 3L
            channel - 4 - 4R

            no luck with either.

I feel like I'm missing something very simple .
            thanks for any help.

I think You are confuse between 8 tracks and 8 channels, if you are on NX like me there are only a few preset that has 8 channels, when you open a new preset and choose new preset, the description on the bottom left tells you how many channel that perticular preset has, find one that match your video that has 8 Channel, not manually put in 8 tracks on the right side.

                capturing 4 channel audio

thanks - yes, I understand that. I've had that set all along.
I just restarted a new project - with 8 channel audio set and mapped.
and re captured a short clip that has 4 different audio channels.
I pulled it onto the timeline - only 2 show up.

                why so complicated?

1 Which camcorder did you use?
2 Which project setting did you use?
3 can you put you put a sample clip somewhere so I can have a look at it?

By way I think , if I look at your post it looks like you did not map the channels but used the channel out map .

                      capturing 4 channels of audio

                      I am using the sony HDV-270U .

I used the hdv 1440 X 1080i 59 frame preset with 8 channels of audio

I'll try to figure a way to get you a portion of the clip.
How do I map the input? I thought that's what I was doing.

                      thanks for your help

                          4 channel audio

Yes, i read the pdf's. I did everything step by step. but when I drag the clip over it only loads 2 channels. If I right click on the clip, look at properties of the clip while still in the bin, the audio panel shows just 2 channels.
Is there something else I am missing during the capture process?
                          thanks
