  • making Mpg, mpeg-2 issue

Every time I try to make any kind of mpeg - (mpeg-2,4, ANY type), my machine crashes half way thru. I can not use Edius, Encore (CS4), Adobe Media Encoder (CS4).... ANY program. At first I thought it was CS4 and uninstalled, re-installed and updated the software. NO GO. Still has the issue
I tried in Edius to make a MPEG2 AND generic Mpeg and both times it crashed.

I mean CRASH - as in totally turned off the power shut down.

This just started happening. I can't make a DVD now.

ALSO - I can no longer watch mpegs that I know worked a few days ago.

WHAT can I do? Is there a card dedicated to mpegs that is going bad? IS there a "master" mpeg encoder utility that went bad? I'm puzzled because it's across several non-related platforms.

    PLEASE help!!!! TY
    S.

PS - adding this in: I CAN make AVI's (from my time lines in Edius) with no issue!!! they play fine and run fine... Also - I can encode flash, and whatnot, with AME. JUST the freaking Mpegs!

If you are incurring power shutdowns check to see if your CPU fan is working and also you might want to check your power supply.

would the power supply just target mpegs?

Not knowing your system specs the conditions could be caused by a power supply that can't handle loading any more or a faulty CPU fan not cooling enough under load.

I too have an edit station that suffers from Mpeg encoding shutdown. I have the progress bar one moment then, gone PC turned off just as if it had been unplugged.

I've checked CPU fan, RAM and hard disks all are fine. It will run all day without a glitch when editing and only gives a problem when encoding.

Its fitted with a 750w PSU so should be OK. Surely Mpeg encoding can't task the system that much?

There is a program that allows you to monitor the temperature of your CPUs. Can't recall it offhand - have to go back and check.

Just a quick question - by any chance - are you doing any form of overclocking?

And what is the exact CPU model you have? Let's hope it is not an errata.

On my part I'm not over-clocking and the CPU is a Core 2 Duo Quad 6600.
It has a huge Scythe CPU cooler/fan which remains very cool to touch even when the PC has been running all day.
All the energy mangement stuff in BIOS and Windows is turned off.

If the problem happens with different files when encoding it can be any number of hardware/software problems, wonky power supply, bad memory cell, bad sector on a hard drive, overheating CPU, corrupted apps/drivers, etc.
