The latter two use lower field first. The DVD preset uses upper field first.

So, if I'm editing in DV, but the final project is for DVD, which preset should I use for the project settings?

      Inquiring minds wish to learn . . . . . .

Well, probably I will need to experiment, as I just produced 2 DVDs using the DV preset, rendering to mpeg and authored using MF5, and they looked marvelous . . . . . .

          Oh, it's always sumpthin'

          Thanks Mr Sparkle

it does not matter if you use DV or DVD

either one will give you the same resulting DVD as long as you set destination field order to upper when exporting to mpeg with whatever you use for mpeg encoding

the source can be lower field (DV) or upper field (DVD), never change the field order of the source

If you're editing DV then use the 'lower field first' preset.

If you're editing from a ripped DVD for example,
which is top field, then use the 'upper field first' preset.

This way it keeps the original footage in it's original field order.
Once you export to DVD or DV tape etc... that's when the field order can be changed for each export requirement.

Yes it all makes sense now. Should have thought it out before posting!

                Thanks all.

keep in mid that using the DVD preset also produces 24bit audio instead of the default 16bit required by the DVD spec audio and not all encoding software supports this

                  DVD spec is 16bit
                  Edius DVD preset is 24bit

however, it will be changed back to 16bit when doing the mpeg encoding, as long as your encoding software supports 24bit source files

What if you're importing and editing both DVD and DV

Don't worry Providing the DVD mpeg clip on the timeline is "Upper" and the DV clip is lower and your Project setting is "Lower" for DV, Edius will take care of it and play back and export correctly.
