I use Sony's clip browser to import Sony EX1 clips into Edius 5.
When I export to file with the XDCAM setting am I getting the same file exported or is it recompressed with Edius? My stock house wants to know that they are getting the absolute best file. I like the small size of the original for upload reasons and hope that is the best, but if Edius enhances anything on the plus side image wise with another output I would be interested.
    I.E.
    original file 45 MB
Edius HD AVI out 159.36 MB
    Avid DNX HD 275 MB

    Big difference in upload size.

If this has been posted before please excuse me for the duplicate, I couldn't find the thread.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

Are you using Canopus HQ as the EDIUS HD output?

The AVI out was Canopus HQ

I forgot to mention I did some color correcting in Edius. would this effect the XDCAM EX output Quality?

Canopus HQ is meant to speed editing - its compression is not high - therefore, you will get a larger file compared with the original output from the camera. But the quality of the Canopus HQ will NOT be better than the original - at best, equal to the original.

Any form of "editing" to digital video (or picture) is ALWAYS destructive - in the sense - the original data is changed somewhat. Is that bad? That depends on the nature of the edit. Increasing visual contrast, adjusting colour balance, etc - if properly done - although it modifies the original data - is meant to improve the visual impact of the original video / picture. The only kind of edit that does not change the frame data will be a crop/trim. You are just chopping frames from the original.

Photoshop does the same thing to still photos. EDIUS do that to videos. Therefore, if you want the "best" from your original, just pass them your originals then. However, the originals might have flaws you want to correct before giving it to them. So - you edit them.

I hope I answered your question ... if not, please ask.

The EX1 compresses to .mp4 on the cards, that Edius can edit, without altering but is probably going to bog most systems. I convert to .mxf (long GOP mpeg2) and it works well enough for me. I'm fast becoming a fan of 720/60p out of this camera.

Hi Rusty, what program do you use to do the conversion, and presumably there is no loss of quality?

THis is technically not correct - MP4 is simply a wrapper or file container - it is not a compression codec.

The data inside the MP4 wrapper IS long GOP Mpeg2 - when u convert to MXF u are simply unwrapping the MPEG stream and re-wrapping it in MXF - the data is unchanged.

For editing in Edius - there is absolutley no advantage to converting MP4 to MXF wrappers as Edius can unwrap them both and work with the MPEG 2 directly

              Hope this clears things up

To work with the original files you must keep them in the original folders and open the .xml files within Edius. Kind of cumbersome. The .mxf is tider by me and works cross-platform.

You can use the .mp4 file directly - simply drag it into the bin etc.

The BEST & EASIEST way to use Edius with EX1 MP4 files is using SONY EX CLIPBROWSER software.

I have found most EX1/Edius users don't know this method but here goes..

Simply hilight the clips from WITHIN the EX clipbrowser software and drag them from CLIPBROWSER into Edius bin - DO NOT USE WINDOWS EXPLORER otherwise u'll be all day going into each folder to dig out the MP4 files.

LIKE I SAY - USE CLIPBROWSER's window to select the MP4 files and DRAG FROM CLIPBROWSER into EDIUS DIRECTLY ! ! !

Now how easy/fast/simple is that!!! no converting- no clip hunting!

There - now you know the best kept secret - but make sure u tell all yr friends!!

                          Thanks Mattie

Yes, that's the method I use, (and I thought most people used), esp. as you can launch the clip browser directly from within Edius (Capture Menu). The fact that each clip is stored in its own set of folders makes it a nightmare to import any other way.

I still find many people using explorer or the FILE>OPEN option within the BIN to hunt out MP4 files directly - what a nightmare!

I use XDCAM HD disks and the process with windows explorer is dead simple

on an XDCAM disk, all clip files are in the same folder, I simply copy and paste to Edius project folder

in fact, it is faster and simpler that using the cumbersome Sony software
