  • Blurred lines with advc300

Does anyone know what's causing blurred horizontal lines in parts of my capture....screenshot:

The tape plays fine when the vcr is connected directly to the tv so I don't think it's a tracking issue. When I play the tape through the advc300 & connect it to the TV the blurred lines appear on the tv.

There are thin black horizontal lines in the tape from time to time (like what's in the "H" on the screenshot). It looks like the blurring might be where those lines are.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Tracking issue, most likely there is a physical wrinkle in that part of the tape. If you're lucky, your heads just need to be cleaned.

If it's tracking why doesn't it show on the TV when the vcr is connected to it? It looks great on the tv with all 4 vcrs that I have but all 4 produce the blurred lines when running it through the advc.

Are you sure it doesn't show up on the TV?

If so, move the ADVC and video cables. Make sure they are away from the TV, VCR and especially power cables. That type of noise can also be introduced by electromagnetic interference.

Yes.....very sure it doesn't show on the TV.

I have 3 tapes that are giving that blurred result & all of them look fine on the tv when the vcr is connected normally but as soon as the advc is brought in the blurred lines begin.

I did try to route my cables in the way you suggested & got the same results.

Does the distortion line move across the frame or is it in a fixed position?

Also check that your computer, the VCR, and the ADVC (if you're using the optional power supply) are all plugged into the same electrical outlet or surge protector. This will eliminate ground variance from the equation.

Not sure what more to look at... maybe try the ADVC on a different machine?

the distortion is in a fixed position

Everything is plugged into the same surge protector

This doesn't happen on all of my tapes......I just tried one that I captured in the past with out any problems & it is being captured well with no distortion but if I pop the other tape in the distortion begins.

The tape isn't the smoothest but it does play fine outside of the canopus enviroment........Do you think I should send my advc in to be checked? Outside of rough older tapes it does great but it distorts the tapes that have artifacts.

              Thanks for your help!

It'd be worth giving tech support a ring and see.

OK......I just tried on another computer & the problem is still there.

I will check with TS.....they haven't answered my email so I guess I will call them.

                  Thanks again

Can you try running the analog signal through another VCR before connecting it to the ADVC300? That is, play tape in one VCR, connect video to line-in on another VCR, and line-out from that VCR to ADVC300. I'm interested to see if that cleans up the signal at all.

                    Ken.
