  • ADVC-55 prblem

    I'm new in Canopus forum.
After many years I decided to take the ADVC-55 for convert all my old Hi-8 tape (PAL).
I'm tring to do it from about some days but I have a very big and strange problem, the ADVC-55 lost many video frames !
I connected my camera via S-VHS and audio cables, and during the playback I continue to see that the led, on the side of the ADVC-55 was not Green but flashing Green and Red and that's mean lost frames, why TAHT ??
I'm using the ADVC-55 with no power supply, but only with IEE1394 power
I tested the video tape directly on the TV and there are not any problem, the problem it seam is the ADVC-55
Maybee may ADVC-55 was foult ?
Maybee the power of the IEE1394 is not good ?
    Any suggestion ?

    Thanks

    Luca

    Hi AmuroRey,

I don't actually own one of these devices but the only thing I can suggest is that you check the S-vhs plugs as they can become damaged very easily (the pins get bent or broken) try a different one, the same with the firewire cable.

Does your computer have many devices plugged into it, USB etc. as these can drain the power supply take these out and try again.

Can you borrow another camera to try and use a different PC, once you've exhausted all these options then I suggest it maybe the AVDC-55.

    I hope this helps

    Jim

    edit:

When you tried it in your tv did you use the S-vhs lead?

      Thanks for you replay
The S-VHS cable is OK, the S-VHS out of my Hi8 camera is OK, I tested both on my TV and the image are very good without any last frames
I use only a Mouse and a Keyboard USB, nothing else on my mobo
I use a 500W power supplay for my PC
      Now i'm tring a power supply also for the ADVC-55, a 5V / 300mA, with an IEEE1394 4-6 cable, but NOTHING !
The situation seam a little better, no lost frames, but in randome time the ADVC-55 lock and no image was trasferred to my PC
I don't know haw to do now, also because Canopus support is very very bad, no one have contact me till now ...

Luca, have you contacted GV via the Canopus website where your product should be registered, then go via the support link, and detail your problem there as I don't think anyone can help unless the've had the same problem with the ADVC-55 product.

        good luck

Contacting via the web site is not going to be the quickest way to obtain support - the good old fashioned telephone works wonders. Support phone numbers are published on the web site.

Remember, as Brandon likes to say - if your house is on fire, you don't e-mail the fire department to come put it out..

I know, but Canopus in Italy is not so easy to find, and the Italian support office will be closed till the end of August for holiday !!!

What I have to dotill September ??

I can use the ADVC-55 like paper holder if no one on that forum and no one from Canopus main office can help me ...

Can you tell us a bit more about your system? What version of Windows are you running? Have you ever captured any DV on your 1394 port before (e.g. from a DV camera)? What sort of 1394 card do you have, is it builtin to the motherboard or is it a PCI card (and if a PCI card, does it have the additional power supply cable connected)? Do you have more than one 1394 port and if so is anything else plugged in (e.g. external drive) while you are trying to capture from the ADVC-55?

                  Ken.

I'm usind Windows Vista x64 with an Intel E8400 CPU, 4Gb DDR2, 500Mb SATA II HD.
My IEEE1394 are directly on my motherboard, a Gigabyte EX38-DS5
Yes I have a DV camera also and no problem with IEEE1394 port
On the mobo I have 2 IEEE1394 port, one with 6 wire and one with 4 wire (I used the 6 wire that can provide also the power for my ADVC-55
I tried some program, Sony Vegas 8, Cyberlink Power Director 7 and also the default Microsoft Movie Maker.
The problem was in all the programs, also because the flashing of the led from Green to Red is present also with no one of the previous program running, only with the Hi8 camera in playing
Is not the S-VHS cable and the Hi-8 camera, because I tried the camera directly on my TV and the image was perfect
I tried also to use normal RC connector and no S-VHS cable, the same problem, lost frame and sound corrupted
Now I'm tring to use an external power for my ADVC-55 and a IEEE1394 4-6 wire cable, the problem is that is not so clear the specification of the power supply on the user manual of the ADVC-55
Like my other post, for the Canopus user manual, I can use a power supply from 5V to 40V and from 80mA to 620mA, but haw is the difference to use one or another ??
I tried one universal power (4V to 12V / 300mA) and the working of the ADVC-55 is still very strange, it seam that it is working good only if I'm using a 12V/300mA setting on the power supply, but I have done it for a very short time because I don't wanto to damage the unit
I hope that some one from Canopus can tell what can I do, or maybee can give me an RMA for the fault of the uinit, but till now no one from Canopus call me or gived to me a suggestion ... and in Italy the support office will be closed till September, a very good situation

can you do a small test

connect the Hi8 camera without tape and turn on the camera

are you able to capture from live camera signal via S-video cable

if yes, then I may know the problem why you can't capture from the tape

I am not familiar with your camera, but I want you tu turn it on and point it towards the wall or something and make sure you see this vision in the viewfinder

now connect the S-Video cable to your 55 and see if you can capture
