  • ADVC-300 on Vista using Vegas 8.0Pro - Hardware Malfunction

First of all, I did read some of the other threads about the Vista compatability with the ADVC-300, but this is something totally different.

    SITUATION:
I just got a new Dell Studio laptop w/ Vista Home Premium SP1 and plugged my ADVC-300 up via firewire. I started my Vegas 8.0 to capture video. As soon as the capture video module opened, my screen went blue with the message "Hardware Malfunction" "System Halted" "Check Your Hardware Vendor"

I repeated this a number of times and got the same results each time. Each time the system froze and I had to do a cold shut down.

    ALSO:
I tried the "Windows Import Video" and it produced the same blue screen results. I installed the "Picture Controller" and again got the same results.

    RESEARCH:
I googled everything I could think of to see if there might be a fix and found nothing.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks,

Are you able to capture from a DV camera? Did you install Vista SP1?

      THoff,

I have not tried another device, but will today and will report back. Yes, I have Vista Home Premium SP1.

      Thanks for your response.

For what it's worth, I have an ADVC-300 and am able to use it on my Vista Home Premium SP1 laptop.

One other thing you should check is whether Windows bridged your Ethernet and Firewire network adapters and enabled the firewall for the Firewire network adapter. I've had problems with that in the past on XP -- it didn't result in a BSOD, but it did prevent software from seeing DV devices.

          Still Malfunctioning

I tried a different device tonight. It was a Sony DCR-TRV20 Camcorder and the result was the same....

          "Hardware Malfunction"
          "Contact Your Hardware Vendor"
          "The System Has Halted"

I also bought a new firewire cable today and disabled my Norton AntiVirus and Microsoft Firewall.

Tomorrow, I am taking my laptop and firewire devices to the store where I made my purchase and try on a similar system that is on display.

Any other suggestions are greatly welcome.

By all means, give that a try at the store...but if that also fails then you might just be best to flag down tech support and take it up with them - you may actually have a misbehaving ADVC unit..

Given that the Sony camcorder is causing the exact same symptoms, I doubt the ADVC is at fault.

I would also try deleting the IEEE 1394 port(s) through Device Manager, and then rebooting. Windows will redetect the ports and reinstall the drivers.

Oops - I missed that. I read it too early on a Monday morning. :)

                  The Port Was Bad!!!!

Today I took my ADVC-300 to the store where I purchased my Latop and plugged it into an exact same demo laptop. The ADVC-300 and Sony camcorder worked great!!! No hang-ups....It captured video without a flaw.

Also, I did try the "uninstall the firewire port and reboot." Unfortunately, I got the blue screen results with the same malfunction messages.

The store gave me another laptop in exchange and the ADVC-300 worked fine on the new one, too.

Many thanks to THoff and GrassValley_KH for your help!!!
