Default Installing EDIUS 6.5 - make sure

Have seen a few complaints that EDIUS 6.5 does not install reliably. I can agree after 5 or so installs, the problem is consistent *IF* I do not follow basic guidelines to "close all other programs running".
I mean, yes we all tend to ignore this because mostly it does not affect installation, however, definately with EDIUS 6.5 it does.
The main problem I found is when any program is running and you start EDIUS install, the license manager starts and then "pow" for some reason a popup claims windows can't restart because these other programs need to be closed..... "restart?" I don't know why Windows would need to restart at that time, none the less, it causes headaches, you then find you need to uninstall license manager and start again, if you don't thinking EDIUS components were not installed, you'll find a license manager error when you reboot after edius install was finished.

I found even a small process/app like sysprep window being open or a browser window can cause this to happen.

So, that's my findings, close all programs even if in the background.

I have seen the same issue on a brand new PC with no other software installed at that stage

error said, 2 programs need to close in order to continue, but it gave no clue what they are

maybe intel raid services? I will investigate next time it happens

yes, that exactly

Also, when you realise it failed, you have to uninstall GV License manager first from add/remove programs, choose do not remove license because you have not yet activated any. The EDIUS uninstaller does not remove GV License manager.
Note. You can re-install the complete package from the Windows\User\*name*\AppData\Local\Temp\EDIUS65 folder without running the CD install disc again

I had tons of issues installing and running 6.5 and 6.51. Sometimes GV License Manager (GVLM) would crash, other times Edius, and it would happen randomly. I'd be able to launch Edius 6.5, open one of my existing project, start scrubbing or playing the timeline, and POOOF, Edius would close. I tried cleaning up all remnants of old plugins and registry entries like the ProDAD and NewBlue stuff that was still there, uninstalled Procoder 3, the HASP drivers and updates, VSTs etc. Nothing helped.

I finally contacted Grass Valley tech support, something I haven't really had to do in the past. It turns out that my AV product interferred with GVLM. It didn't delete or quarantine GVLM so there was nothing in the AV logs to indicate an issue, but it hooked some calls that GVLM makes to Windows APIs in order to detect and prevent potentially malicious application behavior. GVLM didn't like being patched, it may have thought that something was tampering with it.

Regardless, setting up an exclusion for GVLM in my AV software resolved all my problems and Edius 6.51 is running smoothly.

Yeah, I preferred them as well. I have little confidence that the new method will survive a restore of a system backup if that should become necessary.

Not only that, now it might become an issue to update other licensed / Protected A/V software or even Windows it self !

Scary times ahead ...............
