At the risk of being boring, I'd like to ask again the situation with the AE plugin for Edius.
I've just tested After Effects CS3 with the plugin, it works fine, but still we have the problem that you cannot switch between AE and Edius. Edius will not open until you fully close AE. This was not the case with earlier versions of the plug. If you remove the plug from AE, you can happily switch, so it is a plugin problem. Maybe this is not important to many users, but pro and broadcast users utilise After Effects for all their compositing needs. Some will respond with, Boris Red etc etc, but this is no answer to the situation. Grass Valley appear to be interested in presenting Edius as a "pro" software solution, and continued failure to address simple issues such as plugins and, dare I say it VST are not helping to forge a serious link with professional users. I'm sure this post will result in a couple of glib remarks about, " use another software" etc etc, but I'd like someone to say, yes there is a problem and yes they'll be fixed with 4.5. I find it really odd that Edius comes with Sound Soap that will not work correctly, VST support that does not work correctly and the AE/Lightwave/Photoshop plugin that does not work correctly. It's rather like buying a car only to be told that the windscreen wipers only work when it's not raining. I still think Edius works well and 4.5 looks like a great step forward, but please, is it not possible to sort out these tedious faults once and forever? it really is no fun switching software off and starting it up 35 times a day, then removing audio glitches caused by VST errors. Paul

All I can say is that Grass Valley is looking very seriously at the plugin issue.
I can't say anymore than that because anything more than this would be what we hope and want to do and not what has been done. Mike |

Being a heavy compositing user, I too would love to see the integration improved with apps such as AE.
Thanks!

Please pass the word up to the GV people: Please release the Software Development Kit (SDK) so people can again write plugins for this software. No one will seriously consider developing any plugins for EDIUS until they know that they can work with it and understand what can be done with it. Also release all APIs, unlike the old (no longer available) SDK that was extremely limited/crippled. There are threads in this and the old forum that are good examples of a real need for plugin development. Not all plugins will appeal to the masses. Some plugins are developed for very specific jobs. It would be silly to expect a big software company to develop something that they could not sell 1000s of. One example I have are set of filters I have developed for one of this forum user to split the video image into RGB/YUV/YC layers and to be able to move each layer so it can be used to re-align old color-shifted vhs footage. Canopus didn’t write anything remotely similar to do that, no other companies will if there is no profit in it, so let others who have time and interest develop little things like that. The more EDIUS is capable of, more people will want to use it.

I think the answer to this sort of question goes down to $$$, market share, and how much business such developments will bring to the Edius software. Their past integrations with big 3rd party Vendors didn't bring them the market share they expected, so I don't see why they would think it would work second time around. but if they strike a decent partnership, who knows?

Don't forget, products like NX are not Grass Valley, so I'd imagine, unless GV buys the hardware line, we'll see less support for plug-ins before we see more. As mentioned above, it's all about the $$$.
